USD/JPY Price Forecast: 20-day EMA remains key hurdle
AI Market Analysis
USD/JPY: Mildly bearish bias, but confirmation is still required.
The setup is negative for USD/JPY because three forces are leaning against the dollar: Japan’s core CPI accelerated to 1.8% year-on-year from 1.6%, reinforcing expectations that the Bank of Japan can continue tightening; the US Treasury’s larger buyback program may ease pressure in longer-dated Treasury yields; and the pair remains below its 20-day EMA at 159.59. The CPI result matched consensus, so it is not a fresh upside surprise, but the acceleration supports the broader case for a less accommodative BoJ path.
The immediate market mechanism is a potential narrowing of the US–Japan yield advantage. If Japanese rate expectations rise while Treasury yields soften, carry demand for USD/JPY can weaken and the yen may outperform. This also creates a modestly supportive backdrop for other yen crosses to the extent that the move reflects genuine yen strength rather than broad dollar weakness.
Technically, failure to reclaim 159.59 keeps the short-term structure vulnerable. A sustained break below the August 20 low near 158.00 would strengthen the bearish interpretation and expose the August 7 low around 156.68. Conversely, a decisive recovery above the 20-day EMA would reduce downside conviction and suggest that the market is treating the BoJ and Treasury developments as insufficient to alter the prevailing rate differential.
The signal is therefore bearish but conditional, not an outright trend reversal. USD/JPY remains highly sensitive to US Treasury yields, Federal Reserve expectations, further Japanese inflation and wage data, and any BoJ communication. Intervention concerns around the 160 area could also amplify yen gains, while a renewed rise in US yields or cautious BoJ guidance would invalidate the initial downside interpretation.
