Euro to Dollar Forecast: Rabobank Brings Forward 1.18 EUR/USD Target

Currency analysts lift their near-term EUR/USD view and bring forward a 1.18 target as US debt-market worries put the US Dollar back on the defensive. The Euro to Dollar (EUR/USD) exchange rate ended the week around 1.1677 after a sharp mid-week jump carried the pair as high as 1.1711.

Market impact: Moderately bullish EUR/USD, but primarily medium-term rather than an immediate upside catalyst.

Rabobank’s revision changes the timing of its view more than its near-term level: the bank now sees EUR/USD at 1.16 over one to three months, 1.17 in six months, and 1.18 by next spring, compared with the prior 12-month horizon for 1.18. With spot already around 1.1677, much of the initial forecast adjustment is already reflected in the pair.

The more important market message is a shift in the USD risk premium. Rabobank is highlighting US fiscal deficits, rising debt, above-target inflation, and weaker confidence in Treasuries as a safe-haven asset. If overseas investors demand greater compensation for holding US government debt, this could pressure the dollar through higher risk premia, portfolio diversification away from USD assets, and potentially less supportive Treasury-market capital flows. The bearish-dollar implication would likely extend beyond EUR/USD to GBP/USD, AUD/USD, NZD/USD and USD/CAD.

The euro also has a supportive relative-growth backdrop: stronger Eurozone GDP and improved August PMI data, particularly in German manufacturing, could reduce expectations of aggressive ECB easing and improve demand for euro-denominated assets. That creates a two-sided EUR/USD tailwind—less negative euro growth expectations alongside greater concern about US fiscal and Treasury-market stability.

However, the signal is not unambiguously bearish for the dollar. A disorderly Treasury sell-off or broader geopolitical shock could still trigger conventional dollar safe-haven demand, especially while the dollar retains its dominant role in global payments. In addition, renewed escalation in the Iran conflict could hurt the euro disproportionately because Europe is heavily dependent on imported energy, reviving stagflation and ECB-easing concerns.

Trading relevance:

the news supports a gradual upside bias in EUR/USD, but the near-term setup is more consistent with consolidation after the move above 1.17 than with a forecast-driven breakout. The key confirmation variables are US Treasury yields and auction demand, measures of foreign demand for US assets, US inflation and fiscal developments, Eurozone growth data, ECB guidance, and energy prices. A sustained deterioration in Treasury confidence would strengthen the bullish-euro interpretation; renewed risk aversion, stronger US data, or an energy shock would undermine it.
