USD/CAD Price Forecast: Pair Rebounds Toward 1.3900 Ahead of US-Canada Tariff Deadline

USD/CAD is attempting to extend its recovery on Tuesday as traders look beyond Canada's hotter July inflation report and turn their attention to an increasingly important US-Canada trade deadline. The pair was trading around 1.3897 at the time of writing, having recovered from a recent low near 1.3850.

Market impact: mixed, with a near-term upside risk for USD/CAD

The key market change is that the US–Canada trade deadline has become more important than Canada’s July inflation data. Although headline CPI rose to 3.0%, the core measures remained near 2%, reducing the likelihood that the Bank of Canada would respond aggressively. That limits the Canadian dollar’s ability to benefit from the inflation surprise and leaves CAD more exposed to trade-policy risk.

If the proposed US tariffs on Canadian goods are implemented, the initial reaction would likely be bearish for CAD and supportive of USD/CAD. The mechanism would be concern over Canadian exports, business investment, growth and potentially weaker future BoC policy expectations. The effect could also spill into Canadian equities, industrial exporters and Canada-sensitive commodities.

A last-minute agreement, postponement or materially softer tariff arrangement would produce the opposite reaction: reduced downside risk for the Canadian economy could encourage CAD recovery and weigh on USD/CAD. Because positioning is already focused on the deadline, the first move could be volatile and potentially reverse if the final terms differ from expectations.

The inflation data provides only limited support for a sustained CAD rally. Gasoline prices were the main contributor to the headline acceleration, while trimmed, median and ex-food-and-energy inflation remained subdued. Consequently, the BoC’s policy outlook is still more dependent on growth and trade conditions than on the headline CPI figure alone.

Technically, the rebound from approximately 1.3850 places 1.3900 in immediate focus. A sustained move through the source’s 1.3930–1.3950 resistance area would suggest that the recovery is gaining broader momentum; failure around 1.3900 would leave the recent support near 1.3850 vulnerable. These levels are particularly event-sensitive and should not be interpreted independently of the tariff announcement.

What traders should monitor next:

the exact tariff decision and implementation timing; statements from Washington and Ottawa; oil prices; US data and broad dollar sentiment; and whether Canadian rate expectations shift after the trade outcome. The immediate bias is therefore event-driven rather than structurally bullish: tariff escalation favors higher USD/CAD, while de-escalation favors renewed CAD strength.
