Pound to Australian Dollar Price Forecast: Weak Australian jobs keep AUD on the back foot

Pound-Australian Dollar could struggle to hold gains if UK retail sales and PMI data disappoint, although softer Australian business surveys may limit AUD support. The Pound to Australian Dollar (GBP/AUD) exchange rate appreciated on Thursday in response to a weaker-than-expected Australian jobs report.

The Australian employment report is near-term bearish for AUD, because a 15,800 decline in July employment and a rise in unemployment to 4.5% weaken the case for another RBA rate increase later in 2026. The resulting shift in the expected Australia–UK rate differential supports GBP/AUD upside and puts additional pressure on AUD/USD, all else equal.

However, the move is not a clean Sterling-positive signal. The next catalyst is the UK data sequence: weaker-than-expected July retail sales or August PMIs would challenge expectations for further BoE tightening and could reverse some of GBP/AUD’s gains. In that scenario, both currencies could weaken against the US dollar, while GBP/AUD may fall if the UK disappointment is larger relative to the already-priced Australian weakness.

Australia’s preliminary PMIs are also important. A further moderation would reinforce the dovish interpretation for the RBA and extend AUD underperformance, particularly against currencies with stronger domestic-data momentum. Conversely, resilient Australian activity data could limit the employment shock by suggesting that labour-market weakness is not yet broad enough to materially change RBA policy expectations.

Market bias:

  • AUD/USD: bearish to mixed in the short term, with downside risk if Australian activity data confirm a broader slowdown.
  • GBP/AUD: initially constructive for GBP, but vulnerable to a pullback if UK retail sales and PMIs disappoint.
  • Rates and cross-asset risk: weaker Australian data may reduce Australian yield support and weigh on rate-sensitive AUD demand; a broader risk-off environment would add pressure because AUD is also exposed to global growth and commodity sentiment.

The key issue is whether the jobs decline represents a temporary reversal or the start of a sustained cooling trend. Traders should monitor Australian PMIs, RBA communication, Australian wage and inflation data, and the relative surprise in UK retail sales and PMIs before treating the initial AUD weakness as a durable trend.
