Pound to Australian Dollar Price Forecast: Risk-Off Mood Keeps Pressure on AUD

The Pound-Australian Dollar could extend gains if Australian inflation cools sharply, although hawkish RBA signals may limit any downside for the Aussie. The Pound to Australian Dollar (GBP/AUD) exchange rate crept higher on Tuesday as a deterioration in risk sentiment sapped the appeal of the 'Aussie'.

Market impact: mildly bearish for AUD, bullish for GBP/AUD in the near term.

The immediate pressure on the Australian dollar is coming from a deterioration in global risk appetite linked to renewed US–China trade concerns. Because the AUD is highly sensitive to China’s growth outlook, commodity demand and broader carry-trade exposure, threats to Chinese trade relations can weaken AUD crosses even without a direct Australian shock. This is the main transmission channel for downside risk in AUDUSD and upside risk in GBP/AUD.

The more important near-term catalyst is Australia’s July CPI release. The article cites expectations for headline monthly inflation to slow from 3.8% to 3.2%. If confirmed, markets could reduce expectations for further RBA tightening or bring forward easing expectations, widening the relative-rate disadvantage for the AUD. That would reinforce AUD weakness and could lift GBP/AUD, provided the data undershoots expectations rather than merely matching them.

However, the RBA’s recent communication was described as hawkish, with policymakers still concerned about elevated inflation. This creates asymmetric event risk: a soft CPI reading could produce a sharp AUD selloff, while a firm or sticky result could trigger a rapid reversal as traders reprice the probability that restrictive policy remains in place.

For AUDUSD, the setup is therefore mixed but presently downside-biased: risk aversion and weaker China-linked sentiment are negative, while a hawkish RBA can cushion losses. Sterling is not receiving a strong independent boost; UK rate expectations have weakened and domestic catalysts appear limited. Consequently, further GBP/AUD gains would likely be driven primarily by AUD weakness rather than broad-based GBP strength.

What traders should monitor next:

the actual CPI result versus the 3.2% expectation, trimmed-mean or underlying inflation signals, subsequent RBA guidance, developments in US–China/Iran-related trade tensions, Chinese economic data, commodity prices, and whether AUD weakness spreads consistently across AUDUSD, NZD crosses and other risk-sensitive currencies. A strong inflation print or improvement in risk sentiment would materially challenge the bearish AUD interpretation.
