Second-quarter earnings season has largely exceeded expectations.

Gladstone Investment remains a buy despite a 3.2% NAV decline, with strong adjusted net investment income supporting monthly distributions. Gladstone's concentrated portfolio of 29 companies increases both risk and reward, but recent capital deployment and new investments should drive improved results next quarter. The current dividend yield is 5.7%, well-covered by $0.26 per share adjusted net investment income, with potential for supplemental distributions by year-end.

U.S. inflation data for July will be firmly in focus after recent weak jobs data brought the need for an interest-rate rise by the Federal Reserve in the coming months into question.

Emera Incorporated (EMA:CA) Q2 2026 Earnings Call Transcript

The U.S. job market is experiencing renewed flatness, with July payrolls declining by 23,000, primarily in local government, finance, and retail. Despite a seemingly positive drop in the unemployment rate to 4.1%, this masks a significant issue: the labor force is shrinking. It decreased by 264,000 last month, and participation has fallen a full percentage point since December. This trend is driven by Baby Boomer retirements and immigrants exiting the workforce, partly due to aggressive deportation policies. While modest payroll growth may not cause higher unemployment, this shrinking labor pool is expected to weaken overall economic growth and accelerate workplace automation.

S&P 500 earnings-revision breadth hit a four-year high, supporting my bullish outlook despite historically stretched market valuations. Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta could invest roughly $700–725 billion in AI infrastructure during 2026.

U.S. President Donald Trump said the U.S. Congress wants to regulate the AI industry "out of business," according to a Punchbowl News interview published on Friday.

Officials at the Federal Reserve are chiefly focused on the trajectory of inflation after five years of overshooting the central bank's 2 percent target.

Barings BDC offers a 13.5% dividend yield and trades at a discount to NAV, appealing to income-focused investors. BBDC's Q2 saw solid 108% dividend coverage, improved leverage, and manageable non-accruals, supporting near-term dividend safety. Despite a 12% year-over-year decline in total investment income, increased origination activity and resilient fundamentals support cautious optimism.

The U.S. economy lost 23,000 in July, while the unemployment rate fell slightly to 4.1%. The figures showed declines in local government education and retail trade, according to the figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job loss was unexpected, with analysts estimating a gain of as much as 100,000.

US employers unexpectedly cut jobs in July and hiring over the previous two months was revised lower. 23,000 jobs were lost, the estimate was for a gain of 80,000 jobs.
